BIO

Born into a family of artists, Michelle Molnar has painted for as long as she can remember. Coming from a long legacy of gifted painters that include both her parents and her grandmother, Michelle’s love of painting began at an early age. Under the tutelage of her grandmother, Ellen Carroll (a student of Charles Hawthorne and Eliot O’Hara), her passion for visual expression guided her pursuits throughout her life. This path is evidenced by an enviable career in architecture, practicing with such prestigious architects as Frank Gehry. Her career in architecture lead her to Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Chicago before settling in South Florida. While she never strayed from her love for painting, it was her arrival in Coconut Grove in 1998 that marked the seminal moment in her life as an artist.

Immediately seduced by the lush tropics, Michelle was inspired to capture the exotic landscape that surrounded her. Her paintings are filled with bromeliads, palms and orchids which thrive in the warm sub-tropical climate of South Florida. Her recent work has evolved into an indulgent immersion into her surroundings, her images dripping with rich, saturated color, lush texture and luxuriant organic form. Michelle credits much of her ability to render three dimensional space to her background in architecture, while her extraordinary rendition of color and light imbue her images with the stunning sensory and tactile quality which is emblematic of her work. Michelle’s richly woven compositions are executed in a variety of media including pastels, acrylics, oils and watercolors. Her paintings are simultaneously representational and expressive. Her process begins by setting an intention for each piece, such as serenity. The results of this process convey a depth which far exceeds the evident subject matter.

Michelle’s paintings are displayed in both public and private collections throughout the United States. Michelle has been exhibiting her artwork in shows and exhibitions since the age of twelve both here and abroad. Her images have been published in prominent magazines and newspapers in the fields of both art and architecture.

Michelle received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from UNC Charlotte in 1989 and her Master of Architecture from UCLA in 1994. Michelle currently resides in Delray Beach, FL with her two children where she continues to practice architecture as she pursues her love of painting.
